Terms of Service

What Carbon is

Carbon is a documentation service: workspaces of folders and Markdown documents that people and the AI tools they connect read and write. "We" and "us" means the operator of Carbon. By creating an account you agree to these terms.

Your account

You need an account to use Carbon. Keep your password private; you are responsible for what happens under your account. You must be at least 16 years old.

Your content

Everything you or your connected tools put in a workspace stays yours. You give us only the permission we need to store it, show it to the people and tools you have allowed into the workspace, and back it up. We never use your documents to train models, and we never sell them.

You are responsible for what you store and for what the tools you connect do with it. Every change is attributed to the person or tool that made it and kept in the document's history, so mistakes can be undone.

Workspaces and people

A workspace is shared with everyone its admins add or invite. Each member can read and write every document in it and can connect their own AI tools, unless a connection was made read-only. Owners and admins can remove people, disconnect tools, and delete the workspace, which deletes everything in it.

Connected AI tools

A connected tool acts on behalf of the person who connected it, inside one workspace, with the permissions that person chose. We are not responsible for what a third-party tool does with your documents, or for its availability.

Acceptable use

Do not use Carbon to store or distribute anything illegal, to infringe anyone's rights, to attack the service or other people's workspaces, or to send unwanted invitations. We may suspend accounts that do.

The free plan

Carbon is free, with limits on document size, document count, storage and API requests that are shown in Settings. We may change the limits and may introduce paid plans; nothing you have stored on the free plan will be locked away, and you can export everything at any time.

Availability and warranty

Carbon is provided as is. We work to keep it available and your data safe, but we do not promise uninterrupted service, and we are not liable for losses that come from using it or from being unable to use it, to the extent the law allows. Keep your own export of anything you cannot afford to lose.

Ending things

You can delete your account or a workspace at any time from Settings; deletion is immediate and permanent. We may close accounts that break these terms. If we ever shut Carbon down, we will give notice and time to export.

Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be announced in the app or by email before they take effect.
